The Grunting Gym Goer!

Why GRUNTING when lifting isn't good for your VOICE!

PRODUCING VOICE

When we produce voice, our vocal cords open and close after we've taken a deep breath, with the breath travelling up below our vocal cords to cause this to happen.

There is mucus lining on each vocal cord, which helps with flexibility and prevention of irritation when the vocal cords come together.

WHAT HAPPENS AT THE GYM?

If you're a gym goer, and a weight lifter in that, you'll know about the importance of breathing to push through your explosive moves!

LET'S TALK ABOUT DEADLIFTS!

We take a deep breath as we begin, and on the way up; we're working through that movement; we're using our breath to move through the movement. When we come back up we breath out. However, there are some cases where you may be lifting pretty heavy, and you grunt through the move, and then produce a loud 'ahhhh' and drop the weight to finish.

What's happening when we GRUNT and SHOUT?

Your vocal cords are coming together aggressively rather than smoothly, this affects the mucus lining on your vocal cords, and can result in irritation, potentially changing the structure of your vocal cords, and the quality of your voice if done repeatedly, or potentially from one event. Upon investigating this further, you may come to realise you have a polyp or Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD).
