My Lips, Tongue, and Jaw won't do what I want them to do!

Apraxia of Speech- What is it?

What is Apraxia of Speech?

Apraxia of Speech is a MOTOR SPEECH DISORDER which can arise from a stroke or a traumatic brain injury.

What difficulties can arise?

You may experience difficulties saying what you want to say, because your tongue, lips, jaw, and palate won't move in the correct way to produce words and speech sounds.

Which aspects of language may be easier to produce?

  • It may be easier to produce what is called automatic speech; such as days of the week. Being encouraged to repeat or read days of the week out loud may help.

  • Completing a sentence verbally, which has been commenced by someone else may help, such as 'you write with a...' (pen).

  • Using rhythm may help, such as singing songs, and saying common phrases such as, 'hello', 'thank you', whilst hand tapping.
