I know what I want to say but I can't find the Words!

Updated: Feb 3

Do you have Aphasia/Dysphasia?

A Language impairment which can make it difficult to find your words.

Many of my patients say ....

'I know the words, but I can't get it out!'

I understand how frustrating this must be.

You see the object, the item, or the picture.

You see what you want, you know what you want to say, but you can't say it.

You may say a similar word to the one you wanted, for example 'chair' for 'table', or you may feel you are speaking clearly, but the person you're speaking to doesn't understand, and you don't realise that the words you are saying don't make sense.

You may then try to describe the word....

'The thing that cleans the clothes'

This form of aphasia is known as expressive aphasia; impacting on the way you express yourself, due to having anomia (no names) in your repertoire of words.

Alternative ways you may be able to Communicate

You may be able to write the word, draw it or use gesture to help you get your message across.

Speech and Language therapy can help you find and explore the best ways to communicate; to explain how your day was, to say what you watched on TV, to tell your spouse who called the landline today or even that you love them.

A Speech and Language therapist can help you to work on your residual language strengths, such as writing, to enable your brain to find new pathways, to then be able to say the words that you are writing, gesturing or drawing.
