Do you Stammer/Stutter?

Updated: Feb 3

Getting your words out with a stammer can be frustrating and challenging; particularly in a group setting!

What is stammering/stuttering?

Stammering/stuttering or dysfluent speech is the result of speech being interrupted, being blocked or not coming out freely. Speech can be stopped or prolonged. Typical sounds which can be difficult to produce are: /p/, /b/, /m/, which require an explosion of air to produce. This is the same for /k/ and /t/.

Which techniques can help?

BREATHE. Breathe into the sound.

Typically, when someone stammers, they become tense when they come across a sound which is challenging, which blocks the sound even further.

Take a deep but relaxed breath, as if sighing, and say the sound on this relaxed breath. Start with 'ahhh' to practice.
