Becoming a Speech and Language Therapist

Updated: Feb 3

How I became a Speech therapist

I knew I enjoyed studying English in both school and college, as well as biology.

I also knew I wanted to help people.

My first degree was in English Language and Communication, which was also known as Linguistics, and it was here I came across Speech and Language therapy on one of the modules. The module spoke of paediatric speech therapy mostly, but I always knew from a young age I didn't want to work with children. I was intrigued by this profession however, and went on to gain work experience by:

  • Volunteering with the Stroke Association

  • Volunteering and working with Speech and Language therapists on the Acute wards, in the community and in Voice Clinics

Gaining this experience, I realised Speech and Language therapy was the career for me!!

It was very competitive getting onto the Speech therapy Postgraduate Diploma, and experience volunteering was a huge requirement. It took me about three attempts to secure a place on a course, and I travelled from East London to Kent four to five days a week, whilst working as a Supervisor in retail on the weekend.....IF YOU WANT IT....GO FOR IT!

Around 12 years later, I haven't looked back. The role of a Speech and Language therapist is so diverse, so varied, so rewarding!

Are you looking for work experience to give you a better chance of securing a place on a Speech therapy course? Contact me to gain experience.
